Are You Losing Your Mind?

AlzheimerDo you ever have days where you’re feeling super forgetful?

Like not remembering the name of your favorite book, or movie, or that ‘thingy’ you’ve been meaning to buy for weeks – what was that called again?

Maybe you’ve realized that the lines have blurred over the sequence leading up to an event that – even though it happened years ago, used to be so clear in your mind.

A ‘Brian Williams’ moment, if you will.

Then again, maybe you’re thinking one thing, but the words don’t come out quite right.

What the heck is that all about?

Are you losing your mind?

While chances are that isn’t really the case (check with your medical practitioner if you’re concerned) – in a nutshell here’s what could really be going on.

Gluten-Related Disorder

Ah – what haven’t I already said about gluten?

Seems I can never say enough, but I really do have your best interests in mind.

The thing is, gluten is a hugely inflammatory food, one that is very difficult for the human body to digest – even though some have an easier time of it than others.

However, if this is still a grey area for you, you’ll want to check out my educational video series:  A Gluten Primer – Everything You Wanted to Know From A-Z! And also here and here (and throughout my blog, for that matter).

Bottom line: the relationship between your gut and your brain is very clear.

And if things aren’t working well at one end, they’re likely not working so well at the other end, either.

Just as your sensitivity to gluten can easily trigger a leaky gut (as can other triggers in your environment) – having a leaky gut is also an indication of a leaky brain.

The gut-brain connection is very real.

Clean up your diet, and you’ll be well on your way to mastering the rest.

Food Sensitivities

Close on the heels of a gluten-related disorder – Celiac disease or otherwise – are food sensitivities in general.

In other words, ANY food you are eating on a regular basis that doesn’t agree with you, can have a similar effect and contribute to a cascade of symptoms throughout your body – but you won’t always notice that a particular symptom is related to a particular food.

That’s critical to grasp!

Because it means that it can be REALLY hard to connect the dots, especially at first.

However, once you have a better awareness of your body – and all those seemingly pesky symptoms and quirks that are unique to you – you’ll be better off in the long run.

Then again, if you’ve been noticing symptoms all along and ignoring them, it’s time to pay heed!

Anytime your body is talking to you – I call it Body Language – that’s when you want to pay really close attention!

Your Microbiome

Your gut microbiome has become THE buzzword of late, and it’s easy to see why.

In fact, if you think for even a minute, that YOU are the one in charge of your body and your health – I invite you to think again.

The reality is, it’s all those little bugs in your gut that are really in charge, not you.

Yup – those little critters in your gut are the ones running the show!

Without question, this ties in to the conversation about the gut-brain axis. (there’s no getting away from it!)

In his newest book “Brain Maker”, David Perlmutter, MD, does an excellent job explain all of this –and he does so in language you can easily understand.

If you want to restore your digestive health, this is a “must-read” in gaining a better understanding of your precious micro biome, and how the health of your microbiome affects every aspect of your health overall.

It’s fascinating stuff!

OK, it’s not really “stuff” – rather, it’s about all those amazing bacteria in your gut, the good, the bad, AND the ugly.

Lack of sleep

Are you getting enough sleep?

If you’re in the habit of short-changing yourself night after night, then you can be sure your hormones are under duress.

Hint: Have you been gaining weight for no particular reason that you’re aware of?

Lack of sleep – and messed-up hormones – could easily be a contributing factor.

So go ahead and read this article, and then:

  • Go to bed on time
  • Enjoy more energy
  • Experiencing fewer cravings

And maybe even lose some weight!

Stress

Lastly, I would be remiss in not addressing the amount of stress in your life.

How are you dealing with it?

By the way, when I talk about stress, I’m not just referring to the obvious – the fight with your boss, spouse, or significant other, a death in the family or losing your job.

While those are indeed stressful, there are many other ways that your body can succumb to stress, including:

  • Gluten-related disorders
  • Food sensitivities
  • Chemicals in your environment
  • Lack of sleep
  • Too much alcohol or caffeine
  • Leaky gut
  • A less than healthy microbiome
  • Too much Exercise

Oh wait – isn’t that everything I’ve been talking about?

It can seem overwhelming, for sure. But that’s the beauty of working with a health coach – someone who’s trained to help you figure out What’s Going On In There? – and get your life back on track!

You get help with other things in your life.

Why not this?
