George Vanderbilt’s #1 Decorating Tip

Biltmore HouseThis week, I’m digressing a bit into one of my other passions – interior design and the environment.

(For anyone who doesn’t know this about me, I’m not only a Health and Wellness coach – but also an Interior Designer, which explains my profound interest in how our environments impact us on a day to day basis!)

So, during this week’s trip to Asheville, NC , I was truly delighted to re-visit the Biltmore Estate, after roughly a 4 year absence.

Biltmore House, in case you didn’t know, is the famous mansion built in 1895 by George Vanderbilt – one of the wealthiest families in our nation at the turn of the 20th century.

(The American equivalent to Downton Abbey, if you will).

For George Vanderbilt, building his mansion was an opportunity to celebrate his passion for Art, Literature & Horticulture.

Even so, his guide to decorating the mansion was quite simple.

He did not have a decorator.

Nor did he have the equivalent of today’s interior designer.

So, what was his secret?

He simply furnished the house with things he loved!

What could be simpler?

Plus, it’s something that anyone can do!

As it turns out, the idea of surrounding yourself with things you love is easily transferable to ALL areas of your life!

Let’s think about this a minute.

What if – from the time you wake up in the morning until you go to sleep at night – you were able to live your day from a place of absolute awareness of who you are?

And what you love.

If you think about the foods you eat, and how you nourish your body on a daily basis, or the things you choose to do just for fun – it all comes down to the same thing.

Honoring your spirit and choosing things you love!

(That includes exercise, by the way – once again engaging in activities you enjoy, knowing how much your body will benefit).

Of course, this isn’t necessarily an invitation to go shopping, although you certainly could do that if you’re so inclined.

Rather, why not start with getting rid of the things you don’t like – the clutter, and knickknacks and years of accumulated stuff?

Start there.

Free your home of the things you no longer like, or need.

You can start in your kitchen, or your closet, or the elusive room where things have a tendency to sit and collect dust.

Surround yourself, instead, with things you are passionate about – from the foods you eat, to the clothes you wear, to the way you furnish your home.

Even your work place deserves an overhaul.

(Just think how much more productive you will be!)

In the end, it’s the things that fill you up, nourish you from the inside out and make you smile, that allow you to create a look that’s entirely your own.
