A “Sleepless In Seattle” Anomaly

Seattle MediumI was watching the movie “Sleepless In Seattle” the other day (for the umpteenth time) – and found myself caught up in the following exchange:

The Meg Ryan character, Annie Reed, was explaining to her mother how she met her fiancé Walter.

Seems there was a mix-up with their lunch orders.

Walter – who’s allergic to everything – had ordered a Tomato Sandwich on white bread.

Annie had ordered a Tomato Sandwich on whole wheat

According to Annie, here’s what happened:

“One day we both ordered sandwiches from the same place, and he got my Lettuce & Tomato on Whole Wheat – which, of course, he was allergic to – and I got his Lettuce & Tomato on White”

In other words, Walter was allergic to whole wheat bread, but not white bread.

I mean, is that even possible?

Summer Tabbouli Salad

Last week, I wrote about some of the pitfalls associated with gluten-free travel and dining in restaurants.

And I wanted to address the flip side – which is the exhilaration one feels when you discover a restaurant that fully understands & caters to the gluten-free diet.

About a year ago, I found one such place in my own backyard, although, it took a ferry ride to get there.

Our destination was a restaurant in the small town of Vashon – on Vashon Island – with a most unusual name:  The Hardware Store.

At the time, I knew that the Gluten-Free Girl and her husband had a close connection to this restaurant – as he happened to be the chef.

That’s how I knew that dining there would be a very positive experience!

Plus, I love going to a restaurant and having my very own, gluten-free menu – it’s so much easier than having to navigate and play detective.

Sometimes I still need to do that, but at least I know everything will be gluten-free, which instantly removes a certain level of anxiety.

On this particular outing, I ordered Fish and Chips for my lunch.

Later, I was mystified by my choice.

THE FABRIC OF OUR LIVES

A few weeks ago, I attended an innovative & enjoyable interior design event, held at the Theo Chocolate factory in Seattle.

If you’re wondering what chocolate has to do with design, this struck me as such a fun concept I couldn’t resist the opportunity to learn more.

As it happened, the chocolate fest was held in tandem with the viewing of a locally owned fabric collection from O’Ecotextiles.

What these two companies – and their products  – have in common is an environmentally conscious footprint. In other words, from start to finish, both the chocolate, and the fabrics, are sustainably manufactured!

On their website, Theo’s Chocolates boasts they are “the ONLY Organic, Fair-Trade, Bean-to-Bar Chocolate Factory in the United States!”

O’Ecotextiles describes their fabrics as “Opulent, Yet Organic” and “Sensuous, yet Sustainable”.

Tempting, yes?

Well, I’d like to share some sobering statistics about the many fabrics, luscious and otherwise, that we surround ourselves with on a daily basis.

What most of us don’t realize, is that there are over 2000 chemicals used in fabric production.

That’s right – 2000!

You can be sure that most of them are highly toxic, and harmful to both your health and the environment.

Yet the average person has no idea.
