Gift Ideas for the Gluten-Free Foodie

Lebkuchen3lHave you started your Christmas shopping yet? Perhaps you’re still compiling a holiday Wish-List, comprised of things you’d most like to have?

Or perhaps you’re wondering what to give that special someone, who happens to love good food and spending quality time in the kitchen?

Either way, I’ve got you covered.

In the spirit of supporting your digestive health through optimal nutrition, I’m sharing my absolute favorite Gift Ideas for the foodie in your life (gluten-free or not) – and yes, that person could be YOU!

Small Kitchen Appliances

For years already, my guiding principle has been “It’s better to buy well than often.”

Even though small kitchen appliances are often the priciest category, the items I’ve included here are absolutely worth the investment. Ultimately, you’re really investing in yourself – and I’m sure you’re totally worth every penny!

Then there’s this: when you choose the one thing that is most important to you (and you choose well) – you won’t be disappointed.

What’s On Your Table This Week?

PUMPKIN PIE4Are you stressing over your holiday menu?

Perhaps you have the basics worked out already. But what about dessert?

No worries, I’ve got you covered with a special treat – just in time for your big feast. Even better, this Raw Pumpkin Pie allows you to literally have your ‘cake’ (or pie, in this case) and eat it too!

Truth be told, I didn’t grow up with pie.

In fact, I didn’t grow up with many of the traditional dishes we associate with the Thanksgiving feast – thing like bread stuffing and sweet potatoes or yams, never made it into the holiday table.

Did I grow up deprived?

Not in the least! As with most families, we had our own wonderful traditions, many of which have been carried forward to the next generation. (Things like my fabulous Turkey Stuffing with Rice & Pecans, which I shared with you last week).

As we marry or form new partnerships of our own, other traditions sometimes fall by the wayside – as we meld different families and different traditions.

Either way it’s all good! [Read more…]

A Gluten-Free Cookie is Still A Cookie

TrufflesThe holidays are in full swing, no question about it.

And with that comes temptations galore, as you fend off one sweet, gluten-filled treat after another.

But do the holidays – or any special occasion for that matter – really mean you have to forego everything that’s sweet and tasty?

Of course not!

There are hundreds of blogs and cookbooks available to you, filled with mouth-watering, delicious recipes that cater to your special diet – be it gluten-free, vegan, or something in between.

So perhaps the bigger question is this:

Can a cookie – or any sweet treat – still be part of a ‘healthy- aging’ lifestyle?

And my answer is “Yes, absolutely!”

However, there is a caveat.

Can It Be Valentine’s Day Without Chocolate?

Valentine2I can’t help but think that Valentine’s Day is synonymous with chocolate.

Wouldn’t you agree?

Of course, there ARE others ways to show people you love and appreciate them, without involving chocolate, or treats of any kind.

Just doing something nice for another person, or spending time together are a couple of things that come to mind.

And of course – it’s just as important to love and appreciate yourself!

In fact, if you’ve resolved to be kinder to themselves this year by eating less sugar – period – chances are you’re scrambling to find a scrumptious special occasion treat that is still good for you.

Is that even possible?

Of course!

This year, I’m planning to bake something decadent from my new “Paleo Chocolate Lovers’ Cookbook”, by Kelly Brozna – founder of The Spunky Coconut. (Even though I do not follow the Paleo diet, I love exploring her recipes, especially the ones that are free of gluten, dairy and eggs.)

Just for the record, I was blown away by the Macadamia Nut Brownies – how can anything so delicious still be good for you?

The Party Circuit

Bowl of Nuts 2As you can imagine, Seattleites are really excited that our team has made it to the Super Bowl.

Even people like me, who don’t pay a lot of attention to sports (sorry) can feel the excitement.

The other day, I came across a magazine spread featuring the ultimate Super Bowl party food.

The selection included a variety of foods that were especially heavy on carbohydrates, and gluten-containing foods like sandwiches, pasta, casseroles and fried chicken (breaded, of course).

If I went to a party like that, I wouldn’t be able to eat a thing.

Then again, I’ve never been to a Super Bowl party – and probably never will – yet I totally get that the focus needs to be on finger foods and such, that can easily be eaten while watching the game.

But surely one can come up with some healthier munchies, instead?

A pot of chili, perhaps?

In my humble opinion, any party these days needs to cater to different diets – whether gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian or somewhere in-between.

5 Ways to Fine Tune Your Ingredients

Carrot SoupWhether or not you are new to the gluten-free lifestyle, it’s easy to fall prey to less than wise food choices.

Perhaps even more surprising, you can follow a gluten-free diet religiously and still be eating poorly.

How is that possible?

Well, just because your diet is gluten-free – or vegan, vegetarian or something else entirely – it doesn’t mean your diet is healthy.

After all, temptation is everywhere.

And regardless of which diet you follow, processed, sugary foods are often pervasive.

However, fear not.

Below are some easy tips that could easily get you back on the right track.

Embrace Whole Foods

There is joy to be found in eating low on the food chain.

That means embracing the foods that come directly from the earth, with little to no processing.

In fact, that is the very definition of a whole food.

The fewer ingredients, the better off you will be.

Plus, you can be sure that none of these products contain gluten or any other suspect ingredients.

How to Customize Your Diet in 3 Easy Steps

Almonds and avocado slicesFirst of all, here’s the good news:

Even before you became gluten-free or learned you had food allergies, you were already customizing your diet.

You did this every time you decided there was a food you didn’t like!

Don’t care for fish?

Spinach?

No problem.

(When I was growing up the culprit was oranges).

Most of the time, you can easily choose not to eat what you don’t like.

(Unless your parents are telling you otherwise)

We’ve all done this, right?

The challenge, then, is when you are given a specific medical diagnosis – be it Celiac Disease, or a food allergy that requires a special diet.

In other words, your choices have now been taken away – or, at least, that’s how your brain perceive it.

What seems like a logical solution becomes, instead – a threat!

(Our brains don’t like to feel threatened, either).

“What do you mean I can no longer order my favorite pizza?”

“What do you mean I can no longer eat eggs for breakfast?”

Are you kidding me?!

You become defensive, angry.

After all, there’s a big difference between deciding for yourself what you like or don’t like – versus being told what to eat.

Introducing ‘Arbonne’!

On the heels of recommending several ways you can fine-tune your ingredients, I came across a list of foods & additives to avoid when eating gluten-free – a list that extends to beauty products and toiletries.

I thought this was rather fortuitous.

I picked this particular flyer up some time ago at Whole Foods – another very helpful resource, by the way, for a variety of special diets.

Here are some of the items on the list:

  • Binders
  • Caramel Coloring
  • Coatings (i.e. anything breaded)
  • Dextrins
  • Dispersing Agents
  • Emulsifiers
  • Fillers
  • Flavorings
  • Grain Alcohol (beer, ale, rye, scotch, etc.)
  • Homeopathic Remedies
  • Hydrolyzed Protein
  • Malt or Malt Flavoring
  • Modified Food Starch
  • Mono & Di-Glycerides
  • Preservatives
  • Soy Sauce
  • Spices (if anti-caking agents are used)
  • Vegetable Gum (when made from oats)

Pretty daunting, huh?

As if this list isn’t long enough, it’s equally smart to consider your toiletries and beauty products.

That’s right – along with over the counter and prescription medications, everything from toothpaste and other non- ingested products also need to be taken into consideration.

Which is why I’m excited to share with you a product line you may not be familiar with – Arbonne!

While I’m not in the business of selling beauty products, per se, I believe this particular company is another fabulous resource for anyone on a gluten-free or vegan diet.

Arbone products use botanically based formulas that are formulated WITHOUT gluten or animal products.

In fact, they are certified vegan, which means they also don’t use animals for testing.

5 Ways to Fine-Tune Your Ingredients

Whether or not you are new to the gluten-free lifestyle, it’s easy to fall prey to less than wise food choices.

Indeed, whole foods are about as pure as you can get.

Next time you’re shopping for groceries, here are some questions you can ask before tossing less than healthy choices into your grocery cart.

  • Where does the food come from?
  • Is it naturally derived from the earth?
  • Can you imagine it growing in a field?

The journey of a whole food from earth to market is a direct one. These are the foods that are packed full of nutritional benefits that will jump-start your diet in no time.

And that’s what you want.

Eat the Rainbow

Look for the freshest, most beautiful ingredients you can find, especially when buying produce.

Remind yourself to ‘eat the rainbow’.

If you’re not sure what that means, eating the rainbow refers to the kaleidoscope of colors found in nature. Your choices in produce – in a range of colors from red, green, purple, orange and yellow – are the very foods you need to include to ensure optimal health.

Be sure to grab a copy of the March issue of Whole Living Magazine – for an in-depth look at what this concept really means.

Not only are the pictures gorgeous but there are also some delicious recipes for you to experiment with.

Focus on Quality

Beyond produce, look for hormone-free, grass-fed beef and organic, cage-free poultry. Choose wild fish over farmed.

Focus on quality, organic ingredients wherever possible, whether purchasing fresh, frozen or canned.

Speaking of canned, keep in mind that most cans – whether aluminum or steel – are coated with the chemical BPA (bisphenol A), which has recently been the subject of many health concerns.

I buy Eden brand canned beans and Nature Forest Coconut Milk –  two brands that are known to be BPA-free.

Make sure your diet also includes whole grains and legumes, nuts and seeds, and healthy fats.

That’s right – fats can be healthy, too!
