No doubt you’ve heard what the media says about getting older.
All that stuff about genetics and that it goes downhill from there – meaning you’ll be old and sick, tired and achy well before your time – and have to give up your favorite foods, and favorite activities.
Well, guess what?
None of it is true!
Chances are you’re already convinced that being old and sick is just the way it is.
It’s a normal part of getting older, and there’s not a whole lot you can do about it, right?
Wrong!
What about your genes? Isn’t sickness and poor health a foregone conclusion, based on your heredity? Aren’t you doomed form the get-go?
A lot of this confusion about getting older – what I call the ‘myth of aging’ – is based on this outdated belief that your genes are your destiny.
Yet nothing could be further from the truth.
How do I know this?
Look around you, and you’ll find plenty of research that supports what I’m saying – you just need to know where to look.
Dr. Deepak Chopra states in his book “What Are You Hungry For?” that researchers have known for years already that heart disease is related to lifestyle.
He also states that the top researchers and experts on cancer are now reaching a similar conclusion.
According to Kelly Brogan, MD – it isn’t about your genetics, but rather, “ALL of your environmental exposures that are speaking to your genes.”
This includes every single bite of food that you eat, your stress, your quality of sleep and exposures to environmental chemicals.
It’s what’s referred to as “Lifestyle Medicine”.
And it’s so much simpler than taking a pill!
Your genes, it turns out, are responsible for roughly 30% of any illness or symptom you might succumb to.
As for the remaining 70%, it’s those day-to-day things in your environment, your diet and your lifestyle that account for a whole lot more.
By learning how to tweak these environmental, or dietary triggers, you literally have the ability to turn your genes ON or OFF – and control how they get expressed!
How cool is that?
By making simple changes to these 3 things – your Diet, your Lifestyle (sleep, stress, etc.) and your Environment – you can reduce your exposure to the very things that cause you to age well before your time.
In the process, you’ll be INCREASING your exposure to things that are protective.
Of course, this means eating in a way that your body is designed to handle, and not according to what the media has taught you.
Dairy, for example, doesn’t necessarily do every body good.
If you can handle it – fine. But it you’re at all challenged by any health conditions (especially autoimmune disease) – this is one category of food to reconsider, since it’s highly inflammatory. (and addictive – but that’s another story)
Change is hard. I get it.
Yet knowing what kind of diet is ideal for YOU can be a real game-changer!
Yes, it means coming at this with an open mind – and letting go of old beliefs.
But once you recognize the ways in which you could be harming your body and causing undue stress – rather than giving it the nourishment and support it needs – you’ll start to see there’s no turning back.
I use to be in a similar place to where you are now – overweight and tired, and struggling with lots of digestive complaints with each passing year.
I didn’t understand why these problems were creeping up on me, seemingly overnight! I thought I was just getting older.
Here’s what I didn’t realize:
When your diet isn’t ideal, your digestion isn’t going to function properly, nor will your body be able to ABSORB all the nutrients you’re taking in – (whether from food or supplements) – no matter how stellar your diet.
This alone can put you on the path to chronic illness.
The great news is that many of your symptoms CAN be managed and brought under control.
The human body is amazingly resilient and has the ability to heal.
Even better, that power to restore your health lies within you!
Resolution and relief from your digestive woes IS possible, especially all those aches and pains and mysterious symptoms that have left you thinking, “I’m getting old”.
Yes, you ARE getting older.
But as Dr. Mario Martinez says, “Getting older is inevitable. Aging is optional.”
