Is a Boot-Camp Mentality the Answer to Good Health?

Easy HardIn a word, the answer to that question is NO!

But it’s always the first thing my clients want to know.

As a gluten-free Health Coach, I could certainly make it my job to crack the whip.

In reality, though, I prefer a gentler approach.

Besides, when you try to force things, chances are they will back-fire.

Don’t believe me?

Go ahead and try it!

Choose something – anything – and see how successful you are when your efforts feel forced and contrived, or worse yet, you constantly feel deprived.

Such a feat is rarely sustainable.

(That’s why diets so often fail).

Of course, here at Design a Healthy Life, the emphasis isn’t on weight loss.

Rather, it’s about learning to live with Celiac Disease and Food Sensitivities – so you can get past overwhelm and start making make smart, informed decisions about your diet and your health.

With that said, here are some of the most common myths about this so-called “Boot Camp Mentality.”

Do Everything MY Way – Or Else

Maybe you just want to learn how to eat gluten-free and that’s it.

That’s perfectly OK!

The goal of a coach, is to meet you where you’re at.

7 Myths of the Gluten-Free Diet

It’s Too Expensive

While it’s true to some extent that eating Gluten-Free can be expensive, I do believe that there are ways to cut costs and still eat well.

I’m also a firm believer in emphasizing Quality – whether we’re talking food, design or clothing.

Anything of Quality is going to serve you well.

Clothing and furniture will last that much longer, and when it comes to food, well, it’s your health that’s at stake.

So even if the Gluten-Free lifestyle is a bit of an investment for you, I prefer to think of this as Supplemental Insurance.

In other words, you are investing in & taking better care of your body, with the ultimate goal of reducing your trips to the doctor  – and medical costs in general.

I’ve addressed this belief further in my Free Guide:  7 Ways to Design a Gluten Free Life.

It’s OK to Cheat

Actually, it’s never OK to cheat, especially if you’re Celiac and you know better.

I’ve heard horror stories about people who became a good deal sicker – beyond the point of ever being able to recover their health – just from not taking their gluten-free lifestyle seriously.

Again, this comes down to the gluten-free diet being a medical necessity if you are to maintain your health.

If it isn’t a necessity for you, and you’ve adopted a gluten-free diet for non-medical reasons, then that is a very different scenario.

The Gluten-Free Diet is Synonymous With Deprivation

Absolutely not.

This is the equivalent of telling yourself that you will never again be able to splurge on your favorite foods.

Or splurge, period.

I think you can absolutely have your cake and eat it too! These days, you can find gluten-free baked goods in any grocery store, and there are many gluten-free bakeries  – some of them even ship!

BRIGHT, SHINY OBJECTS

Have you visited a Farmer’s Market lately?

I’m not sure which I love more – the brilliant array of colors among the fresh produce, or the tempting selection from which to choose?

I often come home with more food than I know what to do with, even when I set off with something specific in mind. The thing is, everything looks so good that I fall prey to ‘Bright, Shiny Object’ syndrome.

Perhaps you’ve heard of this affliction.

It’s when you suddenly lose sight of the project at hand, your goals, or – in this case – your shopping list, and are suddenly captured by a thought or object that seems infinitely better.

That’s the Bright, Shiny Object calling to you.

This is why I might return from the Farmer’s Market with more food than I, or my family, can eat.

It is also why some of us might be tempted from time to time, to stray from our special diets. Cause let’s face it – temptation is everywhere!

I’m one of the fortunate few who can walk by a bakery without so much as a glance at the delicious array of goodies lining the cases. That said, I understand that for most of us, this can feel like pure torture.

Bright Shiny Objects everywhere – most of them laden with chocolate and gooey frosting.

How do you deal with these temptations?
