What’s On Your Bucket List?

Overflowing bucketYou’ve heard of a Bucket List, right?

That list of things you’ve always wanted to do, but never quite got around to?

In a nutshell, a Bucket List is a way of setting some goals for yourself, namely what you’d like to accomplish in this life, before moving on.

And it’s an awesome idea!

(Perhaps you’ve even seen the movie by that name?)

Today I’d like to share with you a different sort of Bucket List.

It’s an analogy, if you will, a way of looking at the hand you’ve been dealt – your medical history, along with your entire life trajectory and challenges along the way.

In other words, everything that’s you led to where you are today.

So, here’s the thing.

Picture a bucket of water – with the water level stopping about two inches from the top.

Then imagine that, with each of your life experiences, the water in that bucket rises just a little bit higher.

Until, at a certain point, the water starts to overflow.

That’s what I call your “tipping point”.

It’s the point where your body has finally had enough.

All the insults thrown at it over the years – the poor diet, the late-night partying, the job you hate, the stressful relationships, health challenges and more.

Perhaps it was a diagnosis of Celiac disease, or multiple food sensitivities – (an indication of Leaky Gut, by the way).

Not to mention, your exposure to environmental chemicals!

Then again, maybe your bucket hasn’t overflowed just yet.

But all it takes is that one extra droplet, to set in motion a cascade of events your body is ill prepared to deal with.

Things like those unfamiliar aches and pains, or the onset of illness, that leaves you wondering, “What the heck happened?”

Well, my friend – what “happened” didn’t suddenly appear overnight.

Rather, that bucket of yours has been building up for years almost from the day you were born.

Yes, you’ve been creating a “Bucket List” all along – unbeknownst to you, perhaps, but it’s there just the same.

The question now becomes:  “What are you going to do about it?

What have been some of your key triggers along this road of life, and what can you do to reverse the tide?

(Hint:  There’s always plenty you can do! While getting older might be inevitable, getting old and sick is not.)

If you’re genetically predisposed to Celiac disease, then eating gluten is your trigger. (And who among us didn’t eat gluten while growing up?) Even if you’ve gotten away with eating gluten-containing foods up to now – at some point, you will reach a state where you body can no longer tolerate the assault.

It will protest, scream at you – in the only way it knows how, which is to flood you with mysterious and nagging symptoms that won’t go away until you start to listen. And learn what your body really needs.

If you have an autoimmune disease, the triggers are compounded by your exposure to chemicals in your immediate environment. (i.e. your home)

If you routinely deny yourself adequate sleep, that’s another trigger!

Indeed, there are many possible triggers – the list goes on.

And what this means, is that, if your bucket is already quite full – and for most of us, it is – then it’s time to sit up and pay attention.

What small steps could you take, starting today, to re-write your Bucket List?

What can you do, in your own life, to turn back the hands of time and slow down the process of aging?
