Do you believe everything you read on the internet?
To be sure, articles, pictures and the ever-popular infographics are plentiful, to the point it’s sometimes hard to stay on top of everything.
But how do you know that what you’re seeing is even true?
That’s a great question! And I can’t wait to share with you the ‘other’ side of the story.
Case in point, let’s take a closer look at a recent claim circulating on the internet – which is that ANY chemical you put on your skin will enter your bloodstream in 26 seconds flat!
I see this is a perfect opportunity to help you separate fact from fiction, and tone things down a bit.
Cause here’s the thing.
The internet is rife with articles and claims that we absorb up to 60% of everything we put on our skin.
However, this is only partially true – and I’ll explain what I mean by that shortly.
The thing is, while your skin IS like a sponge, it can only absorb some of what you put on it.
Not everything!
And here’s another thing about those infographics – there’s rarely a single citation or study, to back up the claim. In other words, there’s “internet truth” versus “actual truth”.
Your skin is your largest organ, no question about it.
But even if a single chemical, or compound, COULD be absorbed into your body in 26 seconds or less – it’s absolutely impossible to make a blanket statement about ALL chemicals.
Are you still with me here?
What I’m saying is that if you want the straight truth – you simply CANNOT just rely on what you’re getting from Facebook & Huffington Post. You have to read between the lines.
I’d also recommend having someone on your healthcare team who knows this information, and can be a resource for you.
And that someone is me!
As a certified Environmental & Digestive Health Specialist, I’m in a position to share with you the latest facts, based on my combined training and exploration of health as it relates to your environment. (that includes food, by the way!)
The thing is, there’s a lot of ‘untruth’ out there and scare-tactics – and the reason I’m calling this out is because I want you to trust me as someone who will sift through for you what is fact and what’s not.
I’m doing you a solid favor here by breaking down these myths, and giving you the factual version of what’s actually happening.
That’s my goal!
No question, there are a lot of chemicals that ARE getting into us.
And that means they’re also in YOU!
Along those lines, there are many pharmaceuticals that are delivered trans-dermally (i.e. through the skin) through creams, lotions and patches (think of a nicotine patch, or pain medication).
You’re likely already familiar with this – and you know that it works.
And the reason why it works is because it’s based on the knowledge that only very, very small dosages are needed to be effective.
The entire pharmaceutical industry is actually based on this premise, which I realize might surprise you.
All this is to say that the chemicals in personal care products DO get absorbed through your skin, as do certain medications (affecting your weight, your metabolism, your digestive health and chronic disease).
And they DO go directly into your bloodstream.
Does this happen in 26 seconds flat, each and every time?
No, it does not.
However, even though the amounts you might be absorbing might be very small they still have the potential to be MORE impactful – simply because they’re going right into your bloodstream.
And from there, those toxic chemicals can travel directly to your liver – your primary organ of detoxification.
We call this your Body Burden. And yes, there are actually tests available that can tell you exactly what your Body Burden is, as far as chemical exposure.
More on that next time…..
